Salah satu masalah dalam peningkatan produksi dan kualitas mutu cabe adalah adanya serangan organisme pengganggu tumbuhan OPT yang terjadi mulai dari pesemaian sampai pasca panen. Serangan penyakit virus kuning pada tanaman cabai telah menimbulkan kerugian besar bagi petani di daerah-daerah sentra cabe di Pulau Jawa dalam 3 tahun terakhir ini, karena akibat serangan geminivirus tersebut menurunkan produksi cabe hingga jauh dari produksi normal, yang kemudian berdampak melonjaknya harga cabe di pasaran. Mengetahui virus penyebab penyakit secara pasti dan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhinya sangat penting untuk menentukan tindakan pengendalian yang tepat. Awal infeksi geminivirus pada cabai dilaporkan di Meksiko tahun dan, Texas , Thailand , dan Indonesia Kurangnya kesadaran terhadap bahaya penyebaran penyakit yang ditularkan dengan cepat oleh serangga vektor dari tanaman ke tanaman, dan dari daerah terserang ke daerah lain yang masih sehat, menyebabkan luas serangan dan daerah sebarannya meningkat cepat.

The virus can not be transmitted either by seed or mechanical inoculation. In the laboratory the virus can be transmitted by grafting and in the field, the disease spread over only by Bemisia tabaci Genn as a vector of the disease in persistant. The disease widespread at some pepper production centers in Java, Sumatera, Bali, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. The epidemic of the disease is influenced by some factors such as, changing of the planting pattern, the influence of global warming, planting of the new susceptible cultivars, and the formation of new virulence strain of Begomovirus.

Beside attacking pepper, the virus can infect other plants and weeds that belong to Solanaceae, Compositae and some Leguminosae.

The best method to control the disease is by the integrated program such as planting the healthy seedling of pepper, sanitation of weeds that grown souronding the pepper plantation, planting the tolerant cultivars of pepper, improving the planting pattern, and controlling the vector of the disease.
